Army Reserve Tuition Assistance

By Alex Peterson

Although post-high school educational costs are skyrocketing across the country, you're in luck if you're a member of the Army Reserve. Why? If you are a member of the Army Reserve, you are eligible for Army Reserve tuition assistance as a member of the Selective Reserves. In addition, you may also be eligible for assistance with state-funded education if you are a member of the National Guard.

What can you expect if you are a member of the Army Reserve and want help with tuition?

The Army Reserve encourages its members to pursue additional education. Advanced education can help you advance with promotions through the ranks. You need to get this voluntary education on your own time, but the Army Reserve gives you tuition assistance to focus on your studies. This is different from what you could receive from the regular Army, which could include MOS training for enlisted soldiers and AOC for commissioned officers.

What assistance can you qualify for?

Specifically, you could qualify for 100% scholarship for tuition up to $166/quarter hour or up to $250/semester hour (depending on whether your school is on the quarter or semester system). The annual total limit is $4500.

If you are going after your BA or BS degree as an officer, the Army Reserve provides 75% assistance with an annual limit of $4500. They allow $250/semester hour or $166/quarter hour.

Eligibility Requirements

There are also certain eligibility requirements you must meet in order to qualify for Army Reserve tuition assistance. You must:

Have an educational goal that will award you higher credentials than your current degree level.

Be in good standing as a reservist who participates in drills as required.

Make sure that you have enough time in your current term of service to be eligible to receive assistance, if serving as a warrant officer or enlisted soldier.

There is essentially a service payback for commissioned officers. In that status, you would have to have four years or more of Selected Reserve service ahead of you after you finish the coursework for which you get scholarship financial aid.

You must enroll in an independent study course through proper Army Reserve procedures.

For spouses of enlisted personnel

The United States Army also offers what is called the Spouse Education Assistance Program, or EAP, to spouses of qualifying members who are currently serving in Korea, Europe, Okinawa, and Japan. This is a grant for serving members' spouses to help with educational expenses, and has a maximum value of about $350 per term.
